The integration of piezoelectric sensors into smart structures has transformed the landscape of vibration monitoring and structural health assessment by offering high-resolution, real-time data acquisition capabilities essential for condition-based maintenance and damage prevention. These sensors, embedded within or bonded onto structural components, leverage the piezoelectric effect to convert mechanical strain into electrical signals, enabling precise detection of dynamic structural responses such as mode shapes, natural frequencies, and transient vibrations. This review explores the latest developments in vibration analysis methodologies utilizing embedded piezoelectric sensor networks, covering a wide range of configurations from sparse single-point systems to dense arrays forming sensor grids. Special emphasis is placed on signal processing techniques including Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Wavelet Transforms, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) that extract meaningful features from complex vibration signals. The review also categorizes current literature into experimental studies involving physical prototypes, numerical models using finite element analysis (FEA), and hybrid approaches that integrate both for validation and real-time simulation. Key modeling strategies such as multi-scale modeling, coupled field analysis, and sensor-to-structure co-simulation are discussed in the context of accurately predicting the behavior of smart materials under various loading conditions. The role of sensor placement optimization, adaptive sampling, and data fusion techniques in improving system efficiency and minimizing redundancy is critically analyzed. Challenges such as environmental interference, sensor delamination, thermal drift, and energy consumption are identified as persistent barriers to long-term deployment. Furthermore, the review addresses emerging trends such as AI-enabled diagnostics, energy harvesting mechanisms for self-powered sensors, and integration of wireless communication for remote monitoring. These innovations are shaping the evolution of scalable, autonomous structural health monitoring systems. By synthesizing current research and identifying technological gaps, this review provides a roadmap for future developments in smart structure design using piezoelectric sensor networks for advanced vibration analysis and fault detection.
